The One Day at a Time series provides the most thoughtful portrayal of mental health conditions on television. The shows takes it time in allowing for the Penelope character's illness to evolve and the audience can observe how the people around her respond.

The popular culture portrayals of mental health and Latino characters has been an fruitful research project to pursue. The project allowed for including my undergrads in the data collection process. We observe stereotypical images of mental health conditions. In the imaged we examined it was clear that mental health conditions are added to a role where the Latino character is portrayed as aggressive or violent, the victim of violence, or has witnessed violence.
